Video Games
1991: Sega Enterprises introduces the Sonic the Hedgehog video game for the Genesis and Game Gear video game systems in the US. The game was created by Haoto Oshima, Hirokazu Yashuhara, and Yuji Naka in 14 months.
1994: At the Summer Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago, Nintendo announces the release name for Project Reality: Ultra 64, and gives screenings to small groups.
1994: At the Summer Consumer Electronics Show, Sega of America releases the 32X peripheral for the Genesis video game system. It features two Hitachi 32-bit RISC chips, and 3D graphics processor. Price is $159. Code name during development was Mars.
1996: In Japan, Nintendo ships the Nintendo 64 video game system. Price is 25,000 yen. It features 64-bit 93.75 MHz MIPS R4000 Series RISC main processor, 64-bit 62.5 MHz graphics and sound coprocessor, 4.5 MB of RAM, 32-bit color at 640x480 resolution, four control ports.
1996: Nintendo releases the Super Mario 64 video game for the Nintendo 64 in Japan. The game was developed at Nintendo by Shigeru Miyamoto.
1996: Nintendo releases the PilotWings 64 video game for the Nintendo 64 in Japan.
1997: The United States Supreme Court refuses to review the case of Alpex vs. Nintendo of America, letting stand the verdict that Nintendo had not infringed on a patent owned by Alpex.
1998: A federal Court of Appeals rules that Microsoft did not violate its consent decree by bundling Internet Explorer with the Windows operating system. Judge Jackson's order for Microsoft to separate the browser from Windows is overruled.
1999: Advanced Micro Devices announces that it will market the processor code-named K7 as the Athlon processor. The company announces it has started shipping 500 to 600 MHz processors to computer manufacturers.
2001: Sega releases a special edition Sonic Adventure 2 Birthday Pack for the Dreamcast in Japan, available for two days only. The package includes Sonic Adventure 2 video game, a special music CD, 10th anniversary gold medal, and Sonic the Hedgehog series history booklet.
2003: Microsoft announces the new name for its mobile computing operating system: Windows Mobile 2003.
2003: Intel releases the 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 processor. It features Hyper-Threading, and system bus up to 800 MHz. Price is US$637 in 1000 unit quantities.
2003: In San Jose, California, Apple Computer holds its Worldwide Developers' Conference, over five days. Apple Computer announces new Power Mac G5 computers with Power PC 970 processors operating at up to 2 GHz. The computers are scheduled to be available in August. Steve Jobs also shows a new version of the Mac OS X 10.3, code-named Panther.
2003: Nintendo releases the Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US. Price is US$29.99.
2004: Intel releases the Pentium M 715 and 725, in speeds 1.5 and 1.6 GHz, respectively. Prices are US$209 and US$241, respectively, in 1000-unit quantities.
2008: Research firm Gartner estimates that the number of personal computers in use around the world has surpassed 1 billion.
2008: Electronic Arts releases the Battlefield: Bad Company video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.
